Howard, and being fond of Solomon Kane).

However, one of my favorite stories, and which I consider the epitome of Grimdark, is no other than Berserk (Kentaro Miura).Maese Delta's Ramparthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16061593820973266372noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7876216494183628999.post-77446933268050958702017-06-28T08:43:42.648-07:002017-06-28T08:43:42.648-07:00I got the concept when I was very young reading fa...I got the concept when I was very young reading fairy tales. The Goose Girl, by the Brothers Grimm is a fine example of the works published as children's stories to escape political censure. They're also very dark.
Excerpt: Then the false bride said, "She deserves no better fate than to be stripped entirely naked, and put in a barrel which is studded inside with pointed nails, and two white horses should be harnessed to it, which will drag her along through one street after another, till she is dead."

"It is you," said the aged king, "and you have pronounced your own sentence, and thus shall it be done unto you." And when the sentence had been carried out, the young king married his true bride, and both of them reigned over their kingdom in peace and happiness.

So I never thought it was new, and have had my share of laughs over the years at young ones who think they've invented it. But I do like that it's a regular descriptor in Fantasy and SciFi. Folks who understand it well also get why I call my blog site Grimmedian. Escapist fantasy has really ALWAYS included the world around people which, bluntly, is usually a pretty dark and seedy place. Likewise, horror and dark dystopian fiction goes hand-in-hand with fantasy. Grimdark is really a new name for a very old concept.CTPhippshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04226189019351004118noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7876216494183628999.post-30877187409203235352015-07-31T15:44:32.555-07:002015-07-31T15:44:32.555-07:00I would say that Sci-Fi hit grimdark first with th...I would say that Sci-Fi hit grimdark first with the Dystopian novels going all the way back to Jules Verne. Then there are the works of Dickens, Conrad, and Dostoyevsky who while placing their works in the real world or a much darker close facsimile thereof. Of course Warhammer 40k owes a lot to WWI and All Quiet on the Western Front for its general theme.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11726420485855554703noreply@blogger.com
